 What is Respite?

Respite services are designed to provide a temporary relief for caregivers.  These services can help parents and caregivers by giving them a rest or a break from caring for children or adolescents with behavioral health concerns and mental health diagnosis.  The service is provided in the client's home or in the community.  Parents/guardians do NOT need to be present in the home during this time.

Respite Workers provide direct support to children or adolescents and families on an as needed basis in Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Lancaster, and Lebanon Counties.  They are assigned one or more cases based on their availability and work with the family to maximize 20 hours of authorized respite services within a 3 month period.  Respite Workers enjoy a flexible schedule as they are able to work based on their availability and the family's need.  Hours can be served Monday through Friday 8 AM to 11 PM or on the weekends.

 Respite Workers support parents/guardians by:

  • Providing additional hands on support to the family while in the home/community.
  • Supervising the child or adolescent while the parents are out of the home running errands, going on a date night or spending time with the other children who live in the home.
  • Taking the child or adolescent on community activities that could include going to the park, movies, library, etc.

  • Building rapport with the youth and family.
  • Transporting individuals for community outings in personal car as needed (paid mileage).
  • Acting as mandated reporter.
  • Maintaining contact with the family through the authorization period and maximize hours for each client.
  • Participating in company orientation, in-service training, monthly supervision calls, and performance management planning.
